Sharon and I went to an education fair organized by the Ministry of Education [MOE] last Saturday. The fair serves a good forum for teachers, parents and students to understand the latest development of the primary and secondary education system in Singapore. The fair is like our OASIS, where participants can sign up for different breakout sessions. One of my passions is childrens'' education, and I know that this is an area where I can make a lot of money because parents in Singapore love their children so much and they are prepared to spend every dollar and cent on their children. Suddenly, I see $ in my eyes. Yes, I admit that I am materialistic… but this is me.

So, my third breakout session is “Driving Positive Behaviour through Gaming (Valor@Montfort).”  As part of my study of child psychology, I became aware that the child likes to play computer games for several reasons. So, I signed up for this session to find out what I must know in gaming and how it impacts on a child’s education. Further, Valor@Montfort?  What is it?  So, I found out that Valor is a computer lab especially for gaming, and it was an initiative by a few students and teachers at Montfort Secondary School. In this session, the lead teacher, Mrs Tan, and three students shared with the participants how this initiative came about and the entire process from creating the business plan for the principal’s approval to the installation of the game. The entire session lasted 30 minutes but I learnt so much and again relay what I learnt to what a trader should do in his trading business.

Remember I talked about the business plan above?  The students saw the initiative of setting up a computer lab as a business. So, they came up with a plan and sought the principal’s approval. Obviously, in our society, parents who have traditional mindset are against their children to spend time on playing computer games and neglect their studies. They believe that scoring “As” in exam guarantee success in their children’s future. But look at these students who created the business plan. They have nothing to lose if it is rejected by their principal. They have what I call the ‘entrepreneurial mindset,’ which in my view is essential to guarantee survival in future. Don’t we the traders also draft a business plan before we start trading?

The next thing is that the students had to face many issues, ranging from answering the parents’ questions, dealing with the computer breakdown, designing a marketing plan to sell the admission tickets to the other students etc. I must say that it was a comprehensive plan, representing a complete set of strategies to cater to different aspects or problems. Don’t we the traders design our own strategies that help to ensure that our trading business objectives are met?

Now, the best thing I learnt from this lesson is that nothing is impossible. If you dare to dream, it will come true if you have perseverance. One of the students in charge of this project shared with the participants that he never thought that it would be possible to set up an online gaming center in a school. Somehow, there is a perceived conflict between online gaming center and school. Many of us have made a generalization here by relaying smokers, bad students, foul language, etc. with online gaming center. However, where there is a will, there is a way. It is a matter of using the correct strategy to achieve the goal. And I must say that the students-in-charge had learnt a valuable lesson, and this experience will simply build their confidence in seeking future endeavors.  So, how about you?  Have you dreamt of being successful in trading options, forex, futures or even stocks?   What are you afraid of?  Dare to dream and may your dream come true!

Before I end, I would like you to think about gaming and share with me what you think. I will post my thought in my discussion board after this article is published. Maybe with our collaboration, we can learn something and relay it to our trading business. Who knows?
